Blessed are the flexible

When I was in primary school, I remember these group of boys that enjoyed showing off their acrobatic skills. They often would put motor tyres together and one by one, they tumble off and on them. The flexibility of their bodies were beyond comprehension for those of us who were only skilled at being their spectators. They could twist, turn, twist again and turn, on sand, in the air, with or without aids. They were always a joy to watch because they had stunning control and command for their bodies.

One of the things I have been learning of late is to be flexible. Before now, I am often the very tough and principled young man that does not allow distractions to his goals. However, I think there is a gain in being flexible at times. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying being flexible means you should allow distractions to your goals. My pastor made a statement recently and it's been the object of my rumination. He said, "blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken".

Just as those boys in my primary school seem to have an amazing control of their bodies and are not scared to throw themselves up and down, twist and turn, flexibility in a man's life can help him take a lot in without being broken. Some of us are just too rigid for life to pass through us. Guess what? There is no way you will pass through life and life would not pass through you. Reality is often different from fantasies and many of us don't know that until its almost too late to realise.

The fact that you can't get a job as an accountant despite studying accounting doesn't mean you will never be an accountant. It just means, you could still learn one more thing coupled with accounting. The fact that you didnt get admission into medicine does not mean your dream is over; it just means, it may not be meant for you or perhaps its waiting for you in the future. The fact that you can't have that girl to go out with doesn't mean you are not good enough; it just may mean you are not meant to be or you are still going to meet later in future. While I am not encouraging you to give up on your dreams (I am sure you know I am not an advocate of that), I am just suggesting to you a method that seem to work as well; flexibility. Remember, blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken.

  1. True words from a brother sorely missed!

The way I see it, flexibility demands intelligence and focus. Intelligence, to analyse and adapt our dreams to our environment - and focus, to keep that ultimate goal in mind despite distractions.

It's a sure means to the end - as long as we don't employ it as an escape route!

    1. Imisi, bro, its been a long time indeed, I agree. Forgive me, I thought when I finish school, I'd be less busy but its been the opposite. I agree that flexibility calls for attention, focus and intelligence. It also calls for patience, for if we do not give up, we will get 'there' eventually. I will send you a message on facebook soon.

  3. Very good read LDP!! I love the part about reality and fantasies, I fall victim to the notion every now and again, I keep thinking of how things are meants to be instead of appreciating and learning from how things are. 9jafoodie.

  4. Reminds me of a saying by Confucius - “The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.”

  5. There is one way to display flexibility when the will of God is at variance with yours...Better for His will to prevail.

  6. In today's world, you cant even afford to be rigid. Flexibility/diversity in experience is key. There are multitude opportunities to develop latent talent. An accountant can be good with graphic designs, A doctor good at writing. One just never knows until you try.
    Great post LDP.

p.s. you've been MIA on my blog, my friend. Hope you're good?

Hope all is well with you and no matter what you remember that you are blessed.

I have a saying...."we must learn to be like willow trees so we can weather the storms in life." to be stiff is to break, fracture and become deformed.

    stay blessed.

  14. Someone offered me the position of school administration last week...at least until my office gets off EFCC hook. I told him I'll think about it...but I've been stalling cos I have never planned on branching out of oil and gas sector...

But I see this post...and I'm understanding now.

  15. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be broken! Indeed! This post definitely helps me look at my education differently. There are some classes I have to take before getting into my major and I'm not a fan of those classes. From this post, I learned that...although I may not like those classes, but I need them to get somewhere. Thanks for sharing! :)
