When the wind blows and the rain descends
He is not long shaken by financial Collapse
Or catastrophe.
It is only the poverty minded that jump out
of the windows when they lose everything.
The wealthy person cannot lose his wealth.
His wealth is infinitely portable,
For it resides in his head
There lies his only security
- Robert G. Allen
In life there are two kinds of people; winners and quitters. There is no sitting on the fence here. It's either you are a resolved winner or a complete loser. Winners are those with a realization that quitting is for cowards. They don't get discouraged even though situations may look hopeless. They still hope because they are aware, it is often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock. Even in trying times, they don't quit trying! I got to read about the post-it story recently and it fueled my resolve.
Arthur Fry always kept losing his paperwork. He was a failure at organizing things properly such that he was never able to keep track of the notes which he wrote himself. One day he discovered that his company, 3M, had invented a glue which couldn't stick very well. In other words, a glue that failed! It could only hold a piece of paper to something which could also be easily peeled off. Because Fry wouldn't give up, he believed something could come out of the failed glue. Suddenly he realized, the failed glue was exactly what he needed to put all his notes in nice order. That was the idea he later presented to his company, popularly referred to as Post-it®. For the idea, Fry for 1% of the sale for life. Annually, 3M sells over US$100million worth of Post-it. I'd leave you to do the math.
Failure is simply defined as "I quit!" The path of an abject failure is often characterized by ceaseless quit junctures. The reason is because he has mastered the art of throwing in the towel at the sight of every challenge. Sadly, the world no longer has time for failures. In the words of Henry Fodsick, "the world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it". IBM's Thomas Watson was once asked if he was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost IBM $600,000. He replied, "you must be joking! I just spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want somebody to hire his experience?" I love the words Henry Ford when he said, "I am looking for men who have an infinite capacity to NOT know what can't be done".
Oh, I want to be one of such men. I don't know about you, but for me, I have made a resolve to never be a quitter. I have resolved that failure will never get the best of me. I have resolved never to walk the path of an abject failure. I have also resolved never to be in the circus of quitters. Oh, I have resolved not to quit trying even in trying times... Beloved, this is my RESOLVE; what is yours?

ReplyDeleteI refuse to be a failure!
ReplyDeleteQuitting not, way to go.
ReplyDeleteHard but doable. Great post!
ReplyDeleteYou got that right Prof. Never have been a quitter. My research project was born out of a failed one. I had already gotten my ethics approval etc etc when some plans just got messed up. But I went back dusted my books and God helped me see a new angle i could come at the project. Nay, failure is for the man who closes his mind

ReplyDeleteWow, can I be honest here?
This post is incredibly judgmental, "In life there are two kinds of people; winners and quitters," "you are a resolved winner or a complete loser." Wow while I understand the premise of this post is to motivate people however the assertion is a bit lost i.e. the goal is missed because the JUDGMENTS shout louder than the inspiration. At least this is how it reads to me and I am cognisant that may only be true to me.
Le Dynamique Professeur life is neither black or white, there are endless shades of grey with a kaleidoscope of colours all interwoven that influence the way we see the whole, ourselves and how we respond to it. To assert that one is either a winner or a loser is to miniaturize the human capacity to do the unimaginable and to trivialize the sometimes-tumultuous complexities of lived experiences that can at times take a toll on the psyche. Many have to arise out of emotional and psychological trauma (psychic and ritualistic torture, mental illness, cognitive disabilities) for which dealing with takes a lifetime and their successes though may not be measurable by the “world” standards as winners/success, they who have to deal with the trauma and have managed to move forward even by miniscule steps the success is palatable and it is what enables them to move forward. Moving forward Le Dynamique Professeur sometimes is the biggest challenge.
Human beings cannot be categorized (though we often are) into two categories we are not two-dimensional. If the intension is to inspire, motivate, elevate then do so with mindfulness offering proactive suggestions based either on your experiences, someone else’s experiences who have shared their triumph(s) with you or perhaps something that you have read about that may be of solution, when challenges presents itself as it often does in life.
Now I am not saying you are not entitled to your opinion, views, philosophies and ethos (Lord knows I got mine) because I believe based on the time I have spent here reading and interacting that you have a lot to offer. I am saying offer something beyond that, we are all here on this earth wanting the same things (love, acceptance, success-however we define it, to earn a decent wage to a have and maintain a decent standard of living where we can afford healthcare and feed our families) albeit we have differing methods on how to achieve it.
Keep writing, I’ll keep coming
Have a blessed day

longgggggggg time oooooooooo :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm, my resolve
ReplyDeleteI think I've made a similar comment on another post of yours in the past. I really appreciate your posts on the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. However at certain points in life, some people are unable to play 'the winning game.' At such times, the 'softly softly' approach of gentle encouragement may yield better results:)
ReplyDeleteThe Post-it story holds the entire lesson here...
ReplyDeleteWhat else could my resolve possibly be? To NEVER give up, of course. This really encouraged me today. Thanks! Plus, I did not know the story behind "Post-It" notes which I happen to use almost everyday. Now, I will look at them differently...
ReplyDelete...And may God help you in your resolve because it won't be easy. But it can be done!
So help you God!!
ReplyDeleteMy resolve is to look at the bright side in every single thing. Hard but doable Cc Myne
...and you too MsTizzle. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteGod bless you, Ore. Happy you found this useful. Our God will give you the intestinal fortitude to hold on to your resolve even in the face of hard times... You are a success!
ReplyDeleteBlessings :)
Thanks for your critique of the article ma. I often say, I don't write as a counselor cos I am not one. I am a motivational speaker and writer; I write and speak to inspire; to by the grace of God, make people 'wake up'. Not superficially, but to help bring about that light bulb moment where they are able to realize they could actually do much more with what they have, where they are to fulfill purpose. That, I believe, is my mission... For a one on one counseling session, I wouldn't mind taking the 'softly softly' approach. LOL
ReplyDeleteGod bless you ma and I appreciate you.
Hmmm... thank you :)
ReplyDeleteI tell you, Liz :)
ReplyDeleteEny, I agree... u kum bone us follow Oga abi? haha
ReplyDeleteRhapsody,
ReplyDeleteI always like to read from you because you make my next post a better one by making me think well before I write. God bless you Sis.
However, I must say that the line you quote was not intended to judge anyone. I actually meant it! There is no grey in either being a winner or a loser and I tried pointing that out in the post. It's either you are a resolved winner or a quitter. By that, I am not saying winners don't fail, would never fail, or won't make mistakes; I am simply saying, whenever they get knocked down, they just don't quit trying. They are back up again setting a stage for their comebacks. History have always honoured men and women of such resolve not those who quit in their lines because of simple mistakes.
Did you mention disabilities; illness; all these cannot stop a man with a resolve to make it. The lady who wrote the most hymnal lyrics ever was and died blind! I am sure you know about Oscar Pistorius - the amputated athletic that runs on an artificial leg! I also am sure you know about Vick Vujicic - the man without limbs turned motivational speaker! Countless of people like this have shown there is no limit to life's success if one is internally a resolved winner; the main reason I started with the words of Robert G. Allen.
Thanks for the suggestion of writing with my own stories and perhaps ones from others. I actually do; and I think the 'Post-It' story did justice to this post was why I used it.
Like I said earlier Sis, I appreciate you immensely. God bless you.
Thanks and Regards
LDP
