The Shoulder of Giants - LDP & Segun Akiode

I know it all
So much I could barely fall
Seem like I could reach everything
Well built, nothing seem too big
Embedded with such grace like an angel
Yet, I can only do little with much

Can't possibly fathom
How all these won't get me all
All that I wish and ask for
My heart cry, so loud
Wonder why its inaudible
Why am I in this all by myself?

It then occurred to me
I can only do so much
Yet so little without a hand
I can only move all my strength can bear
Yet so few without help
For where my many talents won't get me
I need a fellow... Yes, I do.

- LDP
========================================
I’ve got talent! Yes, I sing beautifully; I dance excellently; No one can play that musical instrument the way I do. Wait a minute; is talent all it takes to succeed in life? John C. Maxwell had a perfect answer to that question in his classic book - Talent Is Never Enough; “Talent is often overrated and frequently misunderstood”. When people achieve great things, others often explain their accomplishments by simply attributing everything to talent. But that is a false and misleading way of looking at success. If talent alone is enough, then why do you and I know highly talented people who are not highly successful?

Let’s consider that question for a while; there are many talented people around us who are not highly successful; many with talents die without the world knowing anything about them. They fail to show the world their talents. While there are many factors that contribute to this state, this post is solely aimed at highlighting one very important factor in the equation of making your talent visible for all to benefit from – People! Of a truth - Where your talent won't take you; People can!

Let’s take a peep at two examples:

Tiger Woods: We all know Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods right? He is the most successful golfer of all time! What about Earl Woods? I can guess, only a few know or perhaps have even heard of him. Earl Woods is Tiger Woods’ father, he was a very good amateur golfer but he helped his son become the most successful golfer of all time! Earl knew his son had great potential to play golf so he introduced him to golf at a very early age of two. Also, Earl Woods had researched in detail the career accomplishments of Jack Nicklaus (the golf legend at that time), and had set his young son the goals of breaking those records. Did Tiger break those records? As they say, the rest is history. You can Google it right away!

Lionel Messi: We all know Lionel Andries “Leo” Messi right? No argument about his identity, I guess. Lionel Messi is considered one of the best footballers of his generation. But, is Lionel Messi the most talented footballer? Many would argue he is; but is he? I must add, there are more talented footballers than Messi but they are not known. Why is Messi world renowned? The answer - FC Barcelona! Messi began playing football at the age of 5 and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. In year 2000, he moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. “Are you serious? Messi the great had a growth hormone deficiency?” Yes, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at age 11, but thanks to Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona for giving him a life-line! Barcelona offered to pay for Messi's medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain. Messi and his father moved to Barcelona and the rest, as they say, is history.

The examples cited may have come from a similar field of life – sports, not because I have any bias for sports but because the essence of this post can be clearly seen from them. Each of the examples shows one singular constant factor – People! My friend, Where your talent won't take you; People can!

Why this whole epistle, you may ask… It is so that we recognize that people are the bridges our talents must go through on its way to limelight. People are the wheels on which our talents ride to stardom. People are the very essence of celebrities in our society. We call them celebrities because people celebrate them and/or their talents. If you disregard people in your life, you will never be celebrated. I’d conclude with the words of Issac Newton, "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants." Go forth and find your own Giant shoulder to stand on, I mean for where my many talents won't get me, I need a fellow... Yes, I do.

  1. Many erroneously believe they can operate as an island, forgetting that the result of one's labour/endeavours can be appreciated only by people!

For every facet of our lives, we need to strive to positively impact others; not by losing our values or seeking approval by all means. Afterall, there'll be no record of the 'good' we have done if no one is affected/takes note.

I've had some people in life that helped me get to where i am today... Friends, classmates, colleagues, acquintances....No matter how much talent or intelligence i think i might have, these people have helped me get by in more ways than i can count.

Yup, I agree with you, “people will take you where your talent can’t”. We must never under-estimate the importance of people in our lives – physically and virtually. We must not under-estimate the value of friendship its impossible to survive without it for we are created to be relational; to work together and to help each other in this journey called life. As my pastor put it, we have been called “To Do Life Together” .

The bonds we build with people through friendship is what our gifts, talents, abilities and our very essence will travel on and through to be presented to the world!  We  really need people to manifest everything that God has already made us.

Amazingly, this has been more or less been theme over at www.adayingodswill.com for the month of August.

Thanks so much for sharing & for the encouragement.

  4. This is definitely a great way to look at things.... whatever you are you have to work hard at it, being good isn't always enough. Thanks so much for this!!

  6. "If talent alone is enough, then why do you and I know highly talented people who are not highly successful?"... Ha! It got me thinking... People, Please I need you!

  7. Talent is never enough, character is a major player.

The reason why success is success is because there are people there to acknowledge its presence. Imagine you had a the biggest house, the best car, the most money and anything you want in the world, but the only hitch is that you are the only person in the world, would you still call yourself successful? I know I am derailing here

  8. I totally agree with this principle, and it has been a major player in my personal and professional life. We should learn to build human bridges and ladders, and be verrrrry slow to burn them.

Thanks for sharing, and nice to meet you Segun

  9. Human beings are a force on their own, the reason we have 'people power' which is never to be underestimated. No man is island on his own, the reason we all need each other even though sometimes we think we don't!

  10. If Talent was all it took, the master would not have been mad at the servant who kept his talent and did not go out to invest it. Talent in itself is useless if it is hidden and not celebrated. Everyone needs people.

  11. Oh.. I so agree with you Liz. Not just we seeking the support of others but also lifting others up. Amen to that!

  12. I tell you! My pastor always say, "If a man wants to finish himself, let him remain in isolation". No man can exist on his own... indeed, we all got to where we are today because some people dedicated their time, treasure... one thing or the other to help us. Thank you.

  16. Hmm... I am glad this is a reminder for all of us. We can all work at it; and ensure our lives accommodate people. Like you said, if we needn't anyone to live life, God would have created us alone but He didn't...

  17. Hmm... People come into our lives and go. Also, the very person we think we do not need again might also be a saviour later in life. We must indeed, like you have said ma, be very careful to burn human bridges; we never know if we'd find ourselves where we once used them again. Thank you ma :)

  18. "...we all need each other even though sometimes we think we don't!" Is it not funny how we think like this atimes? What are we without the people around us? I mean right from our names, people are associated (for instance our surname... its a continuum of our forefathers). We have seen people that just their names got them jobs; contracts... Sure, no man is an island. Thank you, Henry.

  19. Wow! I love the perspective of the scripture you brought into it. That's a rhema on its own. For us to trade our talents, we'd need people to buy into them.. I totally concur! God bless you :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yup, like they say, its not what you know, its who you know. All the talent in the world will get you nowhere if nobody knows you have it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. "its not what you know, its who you know" WOW! I love that. Thank you ma :)

  22. Nice post as usual!! I completely agree that there are so many talented people that are unsucessful jst cos they dnt have the platform to showcase their talent

    ReplyDelete
  23. PLATFORM! That's another word. People are the ones that provide the platform for others to shine. No platform, no glory. Thank you for that insight :) U make sense!

  24. Talent might get you to the top. But it's character that will keep you there... or not. As we realize from the many public and personal examples, staying on top is always more difficult than getting to the top

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh... I totally agree! It takes a man of character to remain on top. In the words of Robin Sharma, "the best thing to do is always the most difficult thing to do". To get people on our side, not only talent is needed, character is very much of significance. God bless you :)

Issac Newton, "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants."
Again, I am reminded that no man is an island....

Psalm 68:6 "God places the solitary in families....."

Thanks my friend for this interesting reminder

  27. Talent is not enough, I totally agree. But talent + hard work + faith in God's strength working in us will certainly take us beyond what the eyes can see. Inspiring post.

  28. I am with Jaycee.
Talent indeed works hand in hand with People, with hardwork, with perseverance, with character. There are talented people who think that they shouldnt work at improving what they have cause its all 'natural'. It doesn't work that way...

    ReplyDelete
  29. inspiring words as always :D
we really need to look deeper to find our potential and work on achieving our dreams..

    Great post,thanks for sharing :)

  30. No man is an island indeed!

  31. Yes o... That's why God didn't stop at Adam. Thanks Sis :)

  32. I totally agree with... while it's good to keep improving on one's skills, we cannot leave out the influence, impact and even essence of people in our quest for stardom.
    Thank you Ginger :)

  33. Talent + Hardwork + Faith in God's strength... Great keys. Two scriptures I love about this topic...
    1. "Seest thou a man diligent in his work; he shall stand before kings and not mere men". There is still that element of Kings (or people) even after the hardwork, talent...
    2. "Behold I send an angel before you to keep you in the way and to be bring you to that place wherein I have prepared for you" | I believe 'angels' in that context are humans God has placed at every junction of our lives towards we fulfilling purpose in destiny.

    Thank you, Jay :)

  37. Thats very true! Talent is not enough.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with Jaycee, I guess the saying is true that says "no man is an island". We all need God and other people to be able to make those talents shine through.

  39. It's not just about what we have, other factors come into play too. Guess that's looking outwards to the bigger picture.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with you ma... looking outside of us is a vital key too atimes...
    Thank you, ma.

  41. Hmmm interesting about the determination of success for me it's self-determining we can defined, re-defined and not adhere to society's definition. We are all unique and see and relate to the world differently and one label can sum up all of us, who we are and determine we are a success or not.

    Provoking piece.

  42. Meant to say society's definition of success cannot define us all, it is too narrow and limiting

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nice one, this post reminds me of one of Calvin Coolidge's quote "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."  so I guess we can add People, persistence and determination are omnipotent.

It is true that talent is not enough and we need to climb on
the shoulders of giants. But, it is not every giant that is caring and understanding
enough to allow someone to climb on their shoulders. So, we need the right
people around us and this cannot be done by just replying on our instinct
alone, we need God to direct us to the right people that we really need. It is
through God that we can know the right shoulders to climb on.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Trustedvisionier, I very much agree. We all need God to know the right giant shoulders to stand on. Thanks for the input.
