Do you still have a head?

Picture from here
When I see a tree
I see its many leaves
For when it is free
It gives as much as it receives

When I see a star
I see the light
Even though it's dark
I see pleasure in the night

When I see a man
I look pass his build
For if he has a head
He sure can get ahead.

Many people walk the streets of our communities today headless. The direction they are going is a mystery to everyone and funny enough, themselves.  Sadly, they know where they are coming from, but where they are going, they lack information about. Let me save you from this ficto-drama-scifi serial analogy I have been trying to put forward. What I am trying to say is that the head of a man defines his identity. No man can live without his head. Disappointingly, many people are alive but are not living- those are the people I refer to as headless. Are you one of them?

So how do I see you and see no head on you? How do I meet you, yet find it hard identifying you? Well, a two main things:

1. You lack vision/purpose
For me, what defines a man is his purpose; what makes him tick. It is identifying why you are 'here' - your reason for living that makes life worth living. You don't have to have a job, a car or a wife for your life to have meaning. Every human being on the planet has a purpose for their existence.  Should you still be looking for yours, make it your primary assignment from henceforth because until you are aware of your purpose, you are no different from a headless chicken.

2. I talk to you and I can't pinpoint the direction of your life
When you talk with people, be sure they can pinpoint what makes you tick. Be known for something. Stand for something or else you'd fall for everything. When people mention your name "John Roger", let them be able to associate you with something that makes you, YOU! When this is lacking about a man, such a man is still headless. No Identity!

This post is not to make anyone upset or depressed about the state of their life. Rather it's to serve as a reminder for anyone caught up in life's many excitements yet forgetting the sole purpose and reason for being 'here'. It is for those who are just walking and thinking "I know I'd get there someday", without actually having a destination in mind. Truth is, when you don't know where you are going, every and anywhere is a destination. People would drag you along like polythene bags and dump you whenever they feel like. You wondering the many reasons for people's misery? This is it! If you are going to get ahead of your game in life, you need a head! This cannot be overemphasized! YOU NEED A HEAD!

  1. Hmmm.. I like your perspective to purpose too ma. The likes of Mother Theresa, Ghandhi and the rest of them followed through such purpose; albeit Ghandhi didn't have Christ is the only sad thing. Those little things we do for people - showing a loving and caring attitude towards others is exactly the example Jesus came to show us on earth. We cannot afford to not live our lives by that example.

Thank you for sharing ma. You are a blessing :)

  2. Thank you ma. I like that part, "The contents of their head tell me where they've been, where they are now and where they are headed to." LOL... its funny but very very true! God bless you for sharing ma.

  4. "The head of a man defines his identity" - wow! That's in fact how I make sense of people - not by anything else but what is in their heads. The contents of their head tell me where they've been, where they are now and where they are headed to. You sum it up well, bro!

  5. I like your explanation "Rather it's to serve as a reminder for anyone caught up in life's many excitements yet forgetting the sole purpose and reason for being 'here'. It is for those who are just walking and thinking "I know I'd get there someday", without actually having a destination in mind..." It is very easy for us to caught up in the many distractions life have to offer forgetting that such things are short-lived and a life with purpose makes living worthwhile (no matter how short). Reading this post and getting inspired, i think i have something to discuss with you (which I will take offline)...

  6. Omoregee, I agree... should one chose friends that lack purpose, one is only setting himself up for meaningless life too cos soon, the friends would make you see less of the essence of life.
PS: and for Ori e, trust me, you will personally get more from me. haha

  7. Fo' shizzle.....purpose n vision are criteria i use in choosing my friends....I dnt need direction-less friends that will lead me astray....when the purpose of a thing is not known, it sure will be abused. Good read!
    P.s- Stop saying 'Ori e'....:P

  11. Thanks Professeur :-)

After asking myself the questions above. I have accepted my destination is for Eternity. My main purpose is to live a Godly life with everything else secondary.

A special person that I know died recently and the greatest memory I have of her, was not of the things she achieved but was of her. A kind person, loving, and caring. Now that is the purpose I have chosen to chase after firstly.

What good is a purposeful career and achievements when (for the Christians) our number one purpose is normally in the small things.

PS- I love your blog :-)

    God Bless

  19. Rhapsody,

The interesting thing is, I actually agree with you totally!

Like I said in the last paragraph of the post, "This post is not to make anyone upset or depressed about the state of their life. Rather it's to serve as a reminder for anyone caught up in life's many excitements yet forgetting the sole purpose and reason for being 'here'"

I would have some sort of condemnation if I hadn't made that statement. While I may refer to some people as 'headless chickens' doesn not mean I am judging them. In fact, its to shame the lack of sense of purpose some ppl have. The truth is if one hasn't found one's purpose, and have a snse of purpose, he/she is on the right track. Albeit, there are some people who haven't found yet, let lack that sense of it, those are the people I would refer to as 'headless chickens'. My reference to such people, once again is not to judge them but to provoke them to what the essence of life actually is. Perhaps its one way of motivating such people too.

As you have rightly said, "As crazy as it may sound sometimes it is not as complex as one would think, sometimes it comes down to people’s inherency of choice and their ability to choose to govern their lives as they see fit and as maddening as it is to witness, be a party to, it is just that, their choice, to choose not to choose and just be as is without fan fare. " CHOICE! Yes, that's the world. What we choose to do with our lives knowing that the giver of life is actually watching and waiting to see how we'd profit withall - just like in the parable of the talents.

    Thank you :)

  20. Blessings.....
hmmmmmmmmm...... very interesting piece, if I may I would like to say that I agree to a degree for I believe we are not just born to one purpose but many. We are not one dimensional but multidimensional. The sum total of a human being cannot be define, confined and constricted to one thing or one purpose.

Certainly some of us find our way earlier in life than some and for those of us who do we are able to define those things we feel makes us who we are. Though we must also bear in mind that who we are is always evolving for who we are today may not be who we are tomorrow as the experiences we encounter may reshape and influence the way we see some things, others, ourselves, the world and hence transform us into something other than we were before.

You are correct when you surmise that we must have a purpose however, I would go further and say that purposes as each purpose is like a ladder to which we continually build ourselves learning, growing and if we are an apt student of life, understanding how to extend ourselves beyond ourselves for we are not Islands unto ourselves, we are a community of connectedness though we would like not to think so.

Are those as you say "headless" less worthy of understanding are they to be judged and labeled? Should they be able to help themselves, according to my understanding and I would say yours based on your writings absolutely, but, I am also cognoscente that sometimes some of us need guidance for which of us at some point in our lives didn't need a hand up, some sound counsel? As human beings we are flawed and we have a responsibility to each other in terms of passing along what we learn however we must be mindful that we cannot teach others experience only share our experiences in hope that it can perhaps help them along a path they are on that you have journeyed.
As crazy as it may sound sometimes it is not as complex as one would think, sometimes it comes down to people’s inherency of choice and their ability to choose to govern their lives as they see fit and as maddening as it is to witness, be a party to, it is just that, their choice, to choose not to choose and just be as is without fan fare.

It takes all kind to make the world go round it’s what makes it interesting, we all won’t make the same choices, we all won’t use the same rules, values and ethos to govern our daily lives and we all won’t come to the same conclusion about a particularly theory or analysis even though we may experience the same things because the way were raised, our traditions, culture, experiences, philosophies and ethos influence how we see the world, each other and our selves.

Thanks for sharing, it was a great read.
Have a splendid day and a magnificent week

  22. This is one of those posts that gets me thinking and makes me reflect about where I am in life and who I am. I would like to believe that I still have my head despite the storms I have been weathering.
I like the way you occasionally challenge us your readers that there is so much more to us and to life generally than we think. Personally I need that time and again to keep myself from living what I would like to describe as the 'whatever life'.
Keep up the excellent work LDP.

  23. Nice.
I like the headless chicken analogy. very apt.
The question I get a lot is "how do you know your purpose?" It's simple. Your purpose is inside you. It is instinctive and intuitive. Finding it is not hard.

  24. Very simple and on point. If we don't understand our destination, it will open up doors for people to come in...similar to being dragged around by different doctrines, tossed by the waves to and fro.

  26. I really have to ask, where is the guy's head? (in the picture) LOL...

To your post, Rick Warren's book, A Purpose filled life was very helpful for me on this issue. We def need direction in life to make it.

  27. Great lesson to also take out of the post i.e. keeping friends that have vision/direction else we will be led astray...
